From 1 November, vehicle adaptations for drivers will be determined by MIA service centres: what Resolution No. 668 changes

31. 10. 2026

From 1 November 2026, Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 668 on amendments to the Regulation on the procedure for issuing driver’s licences enters into force. It concerns drivers and driver candidates who, for health reasons, may need a specially adapted car to drive safely. Adaptations will be determined by authorised staff of regional service centres of the MIA Main Service Centre, and information about them will be entered in the driver’s licence as codes.

In short:

  • a medical certificate may contain a “yes” mark on the need to determine vehicle adaptations;
  • with such a mark, an adaptation or the absence of a need for one must be determined;
  • this is done by authorised staff of regional service centres of the MIA Main Service Centre, who issue a certificate;
  • the adaptations determined are indicated in box 12 of the driver’s licence as codes;
  • the adaptation certificate is submitted together with the medical certificate.

How it will work

If the medical certificate contains a mark on the need to determine adaptations, the next step is to apply to authorised staff of a regional service centre. Based on the results, they issue a certificate on the determination of vehicle adaptations. It will state the required adaptation or that there is no need for one.

The procedure for determining adaptations and the requirements for the staff who do this are approved by the MIA in agreement with the Ministry of Health.

What will appear in the driver’s licence

If an adaptation is determined, box 12 of the driver’s licence will show the relevant codes from the certificate — under the “Vehicle adaptations” section of Annex 1 to the Regulation.

Restrictions for medical reasons under which driving is permitted are also indicated in box 12 as codes under the “Driver (medical reasons)” section.

What documents to submit

If the medical certificate contains a mark on the need to determine adaptations, it is submitted together with the certificate on the determination of vehicle adaptations.

Who this concerns

The changes concern people whose medical certificate contains a mark on the need to determine adaptations. If there is no such mark, this procedure is not needed.

As a reminder: people with disabilities can train at “Barrier-Free Driving Schools”, which operate in 7 regions. According to the MIA Main Service Centre, training lasts 11 weeks, and the practical exam is held in an adapted car with hand controls.
