Forged medical certificate for a driving exam: court hands down four verdicts

In Kolomyia, Ivano-Frankivsk region, MIA service centre administrators found signs of forgery in medical certificates submitted by driver candidates. The MIA Main Service Centre reported this on 2 November. The court considered four criminal proceedings and handed down guilty verdicts in all four.

• MIA service centres check not only personal documents and driving school records but also medical certificates;
• the administrators reported the findings to law enforcement;
• the persons were found guilty under Parts 3 and 4 of Article 358 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine;
• a medical certificate is mandatory for admission to the theory and practical exams.

What verdicts the court handed down

In three cases, the court imposed restriction of liberty for 1 year with release from serving the sentence on probation.

In one more case — imprisonment for 1 year and 6 months with release from serving the sentence on probation and a probation period of one year.

Why a medical certificate is needed

A medical certificate of fitness to drive is a mandatory document for admission to the theory and practical exams. It certifies that the future driver’s health does not pose a threat to them or other road users.

The MIA Main Service Centre stresses that an attempt to “simplify” the process and use dubious services does not cancel the requirements of the law, but may make a driver candidate a party to criminal proceedings. Documents should be obtained only by lawful means.
